Aral Travel guide

Aral is a county-level city in the south of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. It stands on the northern rim of the Tarim Basin, with a city area of about 6937 square kilometers. To the north lie the southern feet of the Tianshan range, and to the south spreads the Taklamakan Desert. The Tarim River flows just south of the city, and one of its sources lies within the city area. The climate is dry and continental, hot in summer and severely cold in winter.

The Tarim River is formed where three rivers flowing down from the mountains around gather. One of its headwaters lies in the south of the city area, and the river's water moistens the oases around. Green spaces are laid out along the river within the city, making cool spaces of water and trees. Orchards of apples, pears and jujubes spread around, and the harvest scene can be seen in autumn.

To the east of the city remain terraces cut by a river that once flowed through this land. A terrain only a dry land can show, it offers a close look at the relation between desert and river. In the desert belt to the south spreads scenery of dunes and riverside woods running on, and in the evening the sand takes on red. In the oases around, cotton and fruit trees are grown actively.

Aral was set up as a county-level city in 2002 and launched as a city in 2004. A branch of the Southern Xinjiang Railway runs from Urumqi, and in 2022 the railway reaching into the city and the airport opened together. From Urumqi it is about an hour and a half by plane and about half a day by rail with a change. It is a place for slowly looking around the oasis scenery made by water and green.

Travel Info

Aral Essential information

Best time to visit

Spring and autumn are mild, making it easy to move about the city and its outskirts. In April the orchards bloom, and in October the fruit harvest comes. In summer daytime temperatures rise greatly and the sun is strong. Winter is severe, with mornings and evenings turning sharply cold. In spring sandstorms can arise, so checking the weather is necessary.

Weather and climate

The climate is extremely dry and continental. The annual mean temperature is about 10 degrees, but the gaps between day and night and between years are very wide. Annual precipitation is extremely low, around 50 millimeters, with clear days running on. In summer daytime temperatures can rise close to 40 degrees. In winter some days fall below freezing, and the swings of cold and warmth are sharp.

Local food

Uyghur food culture makes the most of the produce of the oasis. Skewered mutton and stewed soups are eaten daily. Naan baked from kneaded wheat flour is essential as a staple. The rice dish eaten by hand is commonly made with mutton and carrots. Fruits such as apples, pears and jujubes also come often to the table.

Getting there and around

A branch of the Southern Xinjiang Railway passes through the city, and a station within the city opened in 2022. An airport also opened the same year, with flights to Urumqi. From Urumqi it is about an hour and a half by plane. The city and the sights around it lie apart, so getting about is basically by car. Roads toward the desert can be restricted by the weather.

Travel tips

The dryness is severe, so drinking water and moisture care are a comfort. The sun is very strong, so a hat and long sleeves are desirable. Daytime and morning or evening temperatures differ greatly, so layering works well. When heading to the outskirts or toward the desert, prepare enough water and food. When entering orchards or farmland, following local guidance is good.
