Changchun Travel guide

Changchun is the capital of Jilin province and one of the representative cities of northeast China. It spreads across the central Songliao Plain, and — known as the "Spring City of the North" — is a city of abundant greenery. In modern times, both China's automobile industry and its film industry began here.In the northeast of the city, a palace complex built in the 1930s has been preserved and opened as a museum. Its period rooms and furnishings remain, and its exhibitions tell the modern history of northeast China. Around the center stand Western-style government and bank buildings raised in the same era.Changchun is also known as a "city of film," and the site of the Changchun Film Studio is open as a museum. Through equipment and documents, you can trace the history of a studio that helped shape Chinese filmmaking. Jingyuetan, a sprawling natural park of lake and forest, is popular for walking and cycling. In 1953 the First Automobile Works was established here, and car-making still thrives in the city. High-speed rail links Changchun with Harbin, Shenyang and Beijing, and in winter ice-sculpture events are held. A city where modern history, manufacturing and rich nature coexist, it rewards a slow walk.

Changchun Essential information

Best time to visit

Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are mild and suit strolling the city and its parks. Summer is not too hot and fairly comfortable, while winter is extremely cold. Ice-and-snow events are a winter tradition, but plan with warmth as the top priority.

Weather and climate

An inland climate with large temperature swings. Winters are long, with days below freezing and heavy snow, while summers are short and easy to bear. Spring is dry and windy, and autumn brings long stretches of clear, comfortable weather. With big seasonal swings, layerable clothing is safest.

Local food

Northeastern cooking leads, with generous portions and rich flavors. Sweet-and-sour guobaorou, boiled dumplings and stews are Changchun staples. In recent years, Korean-influenced cold noodles and kimchi have become common, and noodle and grill specialists dot the city.

Getting there and around

The airport is Changchun Longjia International Airport, linked to the city by airport rail and bus. High-speed rail at Changchun and Changchun West stations runs direct to Harbin, Shenyang and Beijing. Sightseeing relies on metro, tram and bus, with taxis easy for major spots.

Travel tips

In winter, bring a thick coat, gloves and non-slip shoes. Phone batteries drain in the cold, so a spare charger helps. Summer is comparatively cool, ideal for walking around the parks and lake. The palace museum has much to see, so allow extra time.
