Changsha Travel guide

Changsha is the capital of Hunan province and a historic city in central China, spread along the banks of the Xiang River. Its history goes back to the Qin dynasty, when a commandery was first established here. Today it is the political and economic center of Hunan and, at the same time, one of China's liveliest entertainment-industry cities.Orange Isle, a sandbar in the middle of the Xiang River that runs through the city center, is laid out as a long, narrow park. At its southern tip stands a statue looking out over the river, a symbol of Changsha. On the opposite bank, Yuelu Mountain is a celebrated peak with views over the whole city. At its foot, the Yuelu Academy was founded in the Northern Song dynasty and, as one of China's representative old academies, is listed as a nationally protected cultural relic. The Hunan Museum is known for the finds of the Mawangdui Han-dynasty tombs. The well-preserved body, silk textiles, painted silk banners and lacquerware unearthed from these Western Han tombs convey the high cultural level of the era. Historic streets such as Taiping Street and Pozi Street also survive in the city, and at night their stalls fill with Changsha's characteristic bustle.Changsha's food is the home of Hunan cuisine. Its flavors layer aroma and sourness over heat, with dishes such as duojiao yutou — fish head steamed with chopped chilies — the fermented-tofu fritter choudoufu, and spicy stir-fried crayfish among the famous. If you are not good with heat, ask for a milder version when ordering. High-speed rail and flights link the city with the wider region, and it makes a starting point for a journey through Hunan.

Changsha Essential information

Best time to visit

Autumn (September–October), with its cooler temperatures and long clear spells, is the most suitable season for sightseeing. Spring (March–April) is also fairly comfortable but can bring long spells of rain. Summer (June–August) is hot enough to be called a "furnace," so do daytime sightseeing in the morning. Winter (December–February) turns cold, though temperatures rarely fall below freezing.

Weather and climate

A subtropical climate whose standout is summer's mugginess. Summers are humid and fiercely hot, but nights cool down and the city's night markets come alive. Spring brings rain, so a folding umbrella is useful. Autumn is clear and comfortable, and winter is comparatively mild with little snow.

Local food

Changsha is the home of Hunan cuisine. In contrast to Sichuan cooking's numbing heat, Hunan cooking is known for aromatic heat and sourness, with duojiao yutou — fish head steamed with chopped chilies — the fermented-tofu fritter choudoufu, and stir-fried crayfish as the standouts. At night, Pozi Street and Taiping Street fill with stalls, busy with locals late into the evening.

Getting there and around

The airport is Changsha Huanghua International Airport, served by flights from major Chinese cities and abroad. The high-speed rail station Changsha South is a major stop linking Wuhan and Guangzhou. Sightseeing relies mainly on the metro, which reaches Orange Isle, Yuelu Mountain and the Hunan Museum. The center is comparatively compact, and taxis and ride-hailing apps are also convenient.

Travel tips

The heat of Hunan cooking is strong, so if it is not for you, ask for a milder version when ordering. Choudoufu has a strong aroma but its taste grows on you. Orange Isle is long and wide, so use the park's shuttle or sightseeing carts to get around efficiently. Yuelu Mountain also has a cableway, useful if walking is difficult.
