Chengdu Travel guide

Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan province, set in the middle of the fertile Sichuan Basin. This rich land, called the Land of Abundance, has been home to a capital since ancient times, and in this flat and green city the habit of whiling away time in teahouses still lives on.

In the northern suburbs is the Giant Panda Breeding Research Base, where you can watch the pandas up close across its broad grounds. Pandas are most active in the early morning, so arriving as the gates open is recommended. In the city center, the Wuhou Shrine, known from the Three Kingdoms story, and the Du Fu Thatched Cottage, where the Tang poet Du Fu lived, make for walks that trace the city's history.

Extend your trip to the outskirts and you reach the Dujiangyan irrigation works, built before the common era and still working today, and Mount Qingcheng, regarded as a birthplace of Daoism. Both are included in the World Heritage site of Mount Qingcheng and the Dujiangyan Irrigation System, and the mountain and water scenery can be toured in a single day.

What lights up a Chengdu evening is Sichuan hot pot, where the numbing heat of Sichuan pepper meets the heat of chili. Mala flavors such as mapo tofu and dan dan noodles are simply part of daily life in this city. High-speed rail links it with Chongqing and Xi'an, and it is a city you will want to visit again and again for its food and relaxed pace of life.

Chengdu Essential information

Best time to visit

Spring and autumn are mild and well suited to walking the city or strolling the outskirts. Summers are humid and muggy, while winters bring long spells of cloudy, chilly days. During the major national holidays the sights get crowded, so shifting your dates lets you take things slowly. The panda base can be visited all year round.

Weather and climate

The Sichuan Basin brings many cloudy days and high humidity. Summers are muggy and winters chilly, though snow almost never falls. With short hours of sunshine and frequent fog, it is also called the City of Mist. Carrying rain gear all year round is a comfort.

Local food

Chengdu is a home ground of Sichuan cuisine, recognized by UNESCO as a City of Gastronomy. Its signature is mala, the numbing tingle of Sichuan pepper layered over chili heat, with mapo tofu, dan dan noodles, twice-cooked pork, water-boiled fish and kung pao chicken among the classics. At night Sichuan hot pot is the standard, and chuanchuan xiang, skewers cooked in the broth, is popular too.

Getting there and around

The air gateways are Chengdu Tianfu International Airport and Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport, with direct flights from Japan as well. The city's subway network is well developed, and many of the main sights lie along its lines. From Chengdu East station, high-speed trains run toward Chongqing and Xi'an, and the panda base can be reached by subway or car.

Travel tips

Pandas are most active right after the base opens and tend to sleep in the afternoon. Sichuan food can be very spicy, so telling the staff how much heat you want when ordering is a comfort. Some popular museums require reservations, so check the official information before you go.
