Chongqing Travel guide

Chongqing is a directly governed city on the upper Yangtze, sitting at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers. Most of the municipal area is mountainous, and high-rise buildings step up the slopes in tiers, which gives the city its nickname Mountain City. Heavy river mists earn it the second nickname, Fog City.

Chongqing is the customary starting point for Three Gorges cruises: boats leave Chaotianmen Wharf and run downriver past Baidi Cheng and the Three Gorges Dam to Yichang. Within the city, the Hongyadong folk-style district — a cliffside block of stilted houses (diaojiaolou) layered along the Jialing — is the visual centerpiece, its lights reflected on the river after dark.

Ciqikou ancient town preserves streetscapes from the Ming and Qing, lined with snack shops and craft sellers. From the lookouts on Nanshan or Goosneck Hill Park, you can take in the night skyline of the two rivers framed by skyscrapers. The pedestrianized Jiefangbei shopping district stays busy late into the evening, and the monorail Line 2 threading between buildings is a Chongqing sight in its own right.

The defining dish is Chongqing hotpot: a deep cauldron of beef fat, dried chilies and Sichuan peppercorns, where ingredients are dipped and eaten with sesame-oil sauce — even in high summer. Chongqing xiaomian (spicy dry-tossed small noodles) and suanlafen (hot-and-sour glass noodles) are local favorites. Jiangbei International is the main airport; the rail hubs are Chongqing North and Chongqing West stations. Lace up sturdy shoes and walk the slopes — the city rewards every sense.

Chongqing Essential information

Best time to visit

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the most comfortable seasons for walking the city and viewing the night skyline. Summers can climb close to 40°C and are hard work outdoors, while winters are often overcast and chilly underfoot, though the fog-wrapped streets have their own quiet charm.

Weather and climate

Chongqing has a subtropical monsoon climate, with year-round humidity and frequent fog. Summers are hot and muggy, with extreme heat days common in July and August. Autumn is comparatively pleasant. Winters are overcast and sun-starved, but sub-zero temperatures are rare.

Local food

Chongqing is famous as China's hotpot capital, with a broth built on beef fat, generous dried chilies and Sichuan peppercorns that produces an intense, numbing-spicy mala flavor. Ingredients are cooked at the table and dipped in sesame-oil sauce. Chongqing xiaomian — dry-mixed small noodles in spicy sauce — and the sour-and-spicy glass-noodle soup called suanlafen are local staples.

Getting there and around

The main airport is Jiangbei International. Within the city the subway is convenient, but the hilly terrain means lots of ramps and stairways, so comfortable shoes matter. The Yangtze River Cableway and the monorail Line 2 are popular as much for the views as for the ride. The high-speed rail hubs are Chongqing North and Chongqing West stations.

Travel tips

Plan on plenty of slopes and steps, so wear broken-in shoes. Hongyadong is especially crowded after sunset — arriving earlier in the evening is worth it. If you are unsure about the heat of the local hotpot, ask for wei la (mildly spicy) or a yuan yang divided pot.
