Dali Travel Guide
A Dali guide to the Old Town, Erhai Lake cruises, the Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple, Xizhou, and Bai tea culture in a historic capital of Yunnan.
Dali Travel guide
Dali is a historic Bai city on the shores of Erhai Lake, a highland lake in western Yunnan. Ringed by the peaks of the Cangshan range, it keeps lake, mountains, and an old town all within a short distance of one another. The gentle scenery formed by the basin and the lake is the foundation of the city's charm.
The center of sightseeing is the Old Town of Dali, enclosed by walls first built in the Ming dynasty. White-walled houses in the traditional Bai 'three rooms and a screen wall' style still remain, and cobbled streets are lined with cafes, souvenir shops, and Bai restaurants. Sightseeing boats cruise Erhai Lake, and from the water you can take in the Cangshan range and the old town at one glance.
In the suburbs, the Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple are the city's emblem, with a history of more than a thousand years. The ancient town of Xizhou, to the north, preserves Bai architecture especially well, and its quiet lanes offer a feel for everyday life. Bai food culture is another pleasure of the trip, from Three-Course Tea to milk fan and clay-pot fish.
In earlier times Dali prospered as the capital of the Nanzhao and Dali kingdoms and was a meeting point of trading routes on the Tea Horse Road. It can be reached from the provincial capital Kunming by rail or air, and riding the cycling path along the lake is a popular way to spend the day. It is a city where the time of lake and old capital can be savored slowly.

Dali Essential information
Best time to visit
Spring and autumn bring many clear days to Dali and are the best time to enjoy the lake and mountain views. Summer sees more rain, though the Cangshan slopes turn a deeper green after a shower. In winter the air is clear, and sometimes snow can be seen on the peaks of Cangshan. Sunshine is strong throughout the year, so do not forget protection.
Weather and climate
Dali sits on a high plateau at a low latitude, so its climate is relatively mild through the year. In the rainy season rain tends to fall in the afternoon, while the dry season brings long spells of clear skies. The altitude makes UV rays strong and the gap between day and night temperatures wide, so a light layer and sun protection will put your mind at ease.
Local food
The food of Dali centers on traditional Bai cooking, with dairy used in many dishes. Milk fan, made by stretching and drying milk into thin sheets, clay-pot fish stewed with tofu and mushrooms, and Three-Course Tea, whose bitter, sweet, and lingering flavors are tasted in turn, are signature experiences. Simple home-style meals can also be enjoyed in the villages along the lake.
Getting there and around
Dali can be reached from Kunming by rail or air, and rail lines also run toward Lijiang. From the airport or station you travel to the Old Town of Dali by bus or car. The old town is best explored on foot, while a car or a rental bicycle is convenient for the lakeshore and Xizhou.
Travel tips
The Old Town of Dali has many cobbled lanes, so comfortable shoes are recommended. UV rays are strong even on cloudy days, so bring sunscreen and a hat. Teahouses offering Three-Course Tea differ in price and content from shop to shop, so checking before you go in will put your mind at ease.
