Dalian Travel Guide
A Dalian guide to Xinghai Square, the scenic Binhai coastal road and the old Western-style buildings, plus fresh Bohai Sea seafood in the port city.
Dalian Travel guide
Dalian is a port city at the tip of the Liaodong Peninsula in southern Liaoning. Sea wraps it on three sides, and the city spreads along the coastline. Because the town was built up under Russian and Japanese influence from the late 19th into the early 20th century, Western-style buildings survive in numbers to this day.
Xinghai Square in the south is a vast urban square facing the sea. Promenades and parks surround it, and at dusk people gather to watch the sun sink into the water. The Binhai Road, running south along the coast, threads cliffs and coves in a scenic drive that links coastal sights such as Laohutan and Yanwoling.
Along the coast, beaches and viewpoints look out over the sea, and in summer the shore fills with people seeking cool air. Old districts preserve corners of Russian-style buildings and shop-lined streets that recall the port's history. Seaside aquariums and amusement parks are popular with families.
Seafood from the Bohai Sea is the center of Dalian's food — sea urchin, abalone and shrimp among the catches. Seafood restaurants are plentiful, and steamed and grilled dishes are favorites. Rail and air links connect the city with Shenyang and Beijing, and many visitors come for the summer cool and the sea's bounty.

Dalian Essential information
Best time to visit
Summer (June–September) brings mild coastal weather, ideal for swimming and shore walks. Autumn is clear, and the seafood is at its best. Winter's sea wind lowers the feel, so bring windproof clothing. Spring is windy, with large temperature swings.
Weather and climate
A climate shaped by the sea keeps summers cooler and winters milder than inland northeast China. Summer is pleasant, making the city a popular retreat. Autumn brings long stretches of clear, comfortable days. Winter is cold, and on windy days the feel drops sharply. The wind runs a little strong all year.
Local food
Seafood is the star of Dalian's food, with the Bohai Sea's catch served fresh. Sea urchin, abalone, shrimp and crab are specialties, with steamed dishes, grills and stir-fried shellfish among the favorites. Seafood eateries abound, true to its port-town character, letting you enjoy the taste of the source with ease.
Getting there and around
The airport is Dalian Zhoushuizi International Airport, linked to the city by rail and bus. High-speed rail at Dalian and Dalian North stations runs direct to Shenyang and Beijing. Metro, tram and bus serve the city, while the coastal sights are best reached by bus or car.
Travel tips
The coastal road's sights are spread out, so a car or tour bus is efficient. Summer beach season fills lodging, so book early. Winter's sea wind lowers the feel, so bring a windproof coat. Walking the old district's Western-style buildings is a Dalian pleasure all its own.
