Dunhuang Travel Guide
A Dunhuang guide to the Mogao Caves and their Buddhist murals, the dunes and Crescent Lake of Mingsha Mountain, and Silk Road flavors at the Shazhou night market.
Dunhuang Travel guide
Dunhuang is an oasis city spread along the edge of the Gobi Desert at the western end of Gansu province. As an important base on the Silk Road, it long served as a crossroads where the trade and culture of east and west met. It is a destination representative of western China, where greenery opens up in the middle of the desert.
The Mogao Caves, southeast of the city, are a group of cave temples carved into the rock face over more than a thousand years from the 4th century onward. Registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, they are known as a treasury of Buddhist art made up of murals and statues. Visits are made in small groups with a guide, and the number of caves that can be seen at one time is limited.
Another emblem of Dunhuang is Mingsha Mountain and its Crescent Lake. At the foot of the dunes, named for the sound the sand makes in the wind, lies a crescent-shaped spring. The sight of water held here while surrounded by desert is the scenery that defines Dunhuang. At the Shazhou Night Market in the city, lamb skewers and noodle dishes can be enjoyed, flavors that keep the memory of the Silk Road alive.
Dunhuang can be reached by air and by rail, with trains running from Lanzhou and the Jiayuguan area. The city center is compact, and the main sights are a short drive away. It is a town found only in western China, where desert and Buddhist art overlap.

Dunhuang Essential information
Best time to visit
Dunhuang is comfortable in spring and autumn, a good time for visiting the desert and the caves. Summer daytime heat is harsh, and if you plan to climb Mingsha Mountain, early morning or evening is safer. Winter is severely cold, but there are fewer people and the Mogao Caves can be visited quietly. Spring can bring sandstorms, so be sure to check the weather.
Weather and climate
Dunhuang has a dry, continental desert climate, marked by a wide difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures. Rain is extremely scarce, and the sunlight and dryness are severe. Summers are hot while mornings and evenings grow cold, so a light outer layer is useful. In the desert, prepare sunscreen, a hat and plenty of water.
Local food
The food of Dunhuang reflects Silk Road influence and centers on noodle and lamb dishes. Hand-pulled noodles topped with donkey meat are a specialty of Dunhuang, and a local dish of lamb stew served with steamed bread is also well loved. The Shazhou Night Market is lined with stalls selling skewers, fried cakes, dried fruit and nuts.
Getting there and around
Dunhuang can be reached by air and by rail. Dunhuang Mogao International Airport has flights from Beijing, Xi'an, Lanzhou and elsewhere, and the city is reached by car. By rail there is Dunhuang Station, which connects at Liugou Station to the Lanzhou–Xinjiang line and to other regions. From the center, the Mogao Caves and Mingsha Mountain are usually reached by car.
Travel tips
Entry to the Mogao Caves is limited, and booking online in advance is essential. In summer and during long holidays slots fill up early, so arrange your visit as soon as your dates are set. Mingsha Mountain grows hot during the day, so visiting right after opening or in the evening is recommended. Sand gets into shoes easily, so easy walking shoes are better suited.
