Mount Emei Travel guide
Mount Emei is a mountain rising in south-central Sichuan, southwest of Chengdu. The elevation gap from foot to summit is large, and the scenery and temperature change as you climb, from the mild climate below to the cool air above. As one of China's Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains, it has drawn devotion since ancient times. Many temples are scattered through the mountain, welcoming worshippers at Baoguo Temple at the foot, Wannian Temple, Qingyin Pavilion, and others. Wild monkeys sometimes appear along the stone-step paths, and people approaching them for food are a sight unique to this mountain. It is a mountain path where the breath of nature can be felt close at hand, even as it is a path of faith. At the Golden Summit at the top stands a golden statue of Samantabhadra, and many people climb seeking the sight of the morning sun rising above the sea of clouds. When conditions align, you may encounter the phenomenon known as the Buddha's halo, in which your shadow on the clouds is ringed by a rainbow of light. Mount Emei and the Leshan Giant Buddha are included as component sites of the UNESCO World Heritage listing.Mount Emei has been revered since ancient times as a mountain of pilgrimage and learning, and many writers visited. From Chengdu, take the railway to Emeishan Station at the foot, then connect to the scenic-area bus and cable car heading up. Hot springs at the foot suit a rest after mountain walks. It is a mountain of depth, where nature, faith, and food overlap.

Mount Emei Essential information
Best time to visit
Spring and autumn are the easiest seasons for climbing Mount Emei. Flowers bloom in spring, and in autumn the trees color, painting the mountain paths. Summer brings much rain, and even the summit can have its views closed off. Winter covers the summit in snow and ice, and is said to be a season when the Buddha's halo appears easily, though equipment against icy paths is needed.
Weather and climate
On Mount Emei the climate differs greatly between the foot and the summit. The foot is mild and humid, the heights cool, with temperatures dropping as you climb. Rain is frequent through the year and mountain weather changes easily, so even in clear weather you can suddenly be wrapped in mist or rain. Layers and rain gear will put your mind at ease.
Local food
Around Mount Emei, Sichuan cooking can be enjoyed to the full. At the town at the foot and at temples in the mountain, vegetarian meals are served, and dishes using tofu made with mountain water are a specialty. After a climb, warming up with a spicy hot pot or stewed fish is the way of this land. Local tea and bamboo-shoot dishes should not be missed either.
Getting there and around
To Mount Emei, take the railway from Chengdu to Emeishan Station at the foot. From Chengdu's airport you can travel by rail or car. From foot to summit the usual way is to connect the scenic-area bus and cable car, and paths for climbing the whole way on foot are also laid out. Getting around the mountain is mainly by bus and cable car.
Travel tips
The altitude is high and temperatures vary widely, so even in summer warm clothing and rain gear are needed. Monkeys along the paths may go after food, so keep food out of sight and avoid meeting their eyes. Lodging on the Golden Summit is limited, so booking early will put your mind at ease if you plan to stay.
