Foshan Travel guide

Foshan sits in central Guangdong, immediately west of Guangzhou, and together they form a single metropolitan area. The city is steeped in Chinese martial arts tradition — both Wong Fei-hung and Ip Man trace their roots here — and martial-arts schools are still scattered across its neighborhoods. The centerpiece for visitors is the Zumiao Temple (Ancestral Temple), a complex said to have been founded in the Northern Song dynasty. The temple complex carries a Cantonese opera stage and a martial-arts training hall alongside the temple buildings, and is listed as a Major Historical and Cultural Site under national protection. Inside, displays cover the lives of Wong Fei-hung and Ip Man, and there are regular demonstrations of traditional crafts. In the Shiwan district, the Nanfeng Ancient Kiln dates from the Ming dynasty and is said to have kept its fires burning for over five centuries — still used today for pottery. Surrounding the kiln, ceramic workshops keep the Shiwan pottery tradition alive. Foshan is also one of the centers of Cantonese cuisine, particularly the cooking of Shunde district, where fresh seafood and delicate dim sum are everyday food. In 2014, Shunde was designated a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy.Foshan is close enough to Guangzhou for an easy day trip, with high-speed rail and subway tying them together. Martial arts, ceramics and Cantonese food line up across one compact city — a useful complement to a longer Guangzhou stay.

Foshan Essential information

Best time to visit

Autumn (October–November) into winter (December–February) is the most comfortable time. Temperatures stay mild and the city is easy to walk. Summers are muggy with frequent rain, and spring is humid. The Chinese New Year period brings flower markets and crowds — leave yourself extra time if you visit then.

Weather and climate

Foshan has a subtropical monsoon climate, with warm and humid conditions year-round. Summer temperatures climb and bring frequent short downpours. Autumn is the sunniest and most pleasant season. Winter days remain relatively mild. Rain is common across the year, so a folding umbrella is useful from spring into summer.

Local food

Foshan is one of the centers of Cantonese cooking, with Shunde district especially celebrated for delicate steamed seafood and fresh dim sum. Local sweets and baked treats, including milk-based puddings, are part of everyday eating. Shunde was designated a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy in 2014.

Getting there and around

Foshan is connected to Guangzhou by subway, with transfers onward from Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport. The high-speed rail hub is Foshan West, with quick trains from Guangzhou South. Within Foshan, the subway reaches the Zumiao Temple; buses and taxis are the usual way to reach the Nanfeng Ancient Kiln in Shiwan.

Travel tips

Foshan works well as a day trip from Guangzhou. The Zumiao Temple occasionally hosts martial arts or opera demonstrations — check performance times. Around the Nanfeng Ancient Kiln in Shiwan, workshops sell pottery as a souvenir. Rain is common in summer, so a folding umbrella is useful.
