Fuzhou Travel guide

Fuzhou is the capital of Fujian Province in southeastern China, a port city looking out across the Taiwan Strait. Bordered by great banyans, it is nicknamed the Banyan City (Rongcheng). A trading port since the Tang dynasty, it has long been Fujian's political and cultural center. The city's most distinctive historic neighborhood is the Three Lanes and Seven Alleys (Sanfang Qixiang), whose layout follows the old ward-and-lane system of three wards to the west, seven lanes to the east and a central axis — long described as a living fossil of the system and a museum of Ming and Qing residential architecture. Behind the white walls and dark roof tiles sit the restored houses of merchants and scholars from earlier centuries. To the east of the city rises Gushan (Drum Mountain), the city's signature peak. Old temples dot its slopes, and the trail from the base rewards walkers with views back over the city. The presence of natural hot springs within the urban area is another Fuzhou point of difference — visitors can usually fit a soak into a day's sightseeing. The local cuisine, Fuzhou cuisine, is one of the principal branches of Fujian cooking, with a reputation for lightness: fish-ball dumplings filled with seasoned pork, and rice-noodle soups poured at the table from a heated pan.Fuzhou, close to Taiwan, has kept a cultural life of its own. High-speed rail links it with Xiamen and Shanghai, both within easy reach. Hot springs, old lanes and refined local dishes — Fuzhou rewards a slower pace.

Fuzhou Essential information

Best time to visit

Autumn (October–November) into winter (December–February) is the most comfortable time to visit. Autumn brings clear air and winter stays mild, and the hot springs feel particularly welcome in the cooler months. Spring is wet and summer muggy; from summer into autumn, typhoons can affect travel, so check forecasts before going.

Weather and climate

Fuzhou has a subtropical monsoon climate and stays warm and humid year-round. Spring brings more rain and the early-summer rainy stretch can persist. Summers are muggy, with typhoon risk rising through late summer. Autumn is the sunniest, most pleasant season, and winter days remain pleasantly mild. A folding umbrella is worth carrying.

Local food

Fuzhou cuisine is one of the principal branches of Fujian cooking, defined by light, careful cooking that lets the ingredients speak. Fish-ball dumplings with seasoned pork fillings are an everyday dish; rice-noodle soup cooked in a hot pan at the table is a common breakfast. Slow-simmered soups with prized ingredients are reserved for celebratory meals.

Getting there and around

Fuzhou Changle International is the main airport, with subway and airport buses into the center. The rail hubs are Fuzhou Station and Fuzhou South, with high-speed services to Xiamen and Shanghai. The city's subway serves the Three Lanes and Seven Alleys; buses and taxis are the usual way to reach Gushan.

Travel tips

The Three Lanes and Seven Alleys cover more ground than they look — allow half a day to do them justice. Small lane-side shops serve fish-ball dumplings and pork wontons as a quick snack. The city has plenty of hot-spring facilities, ranging from public bathhouses to in-hotel pools. Typhoons can disrupt transport from summer into autumn — leave slack in your plans.
