Haikou Travel Guide
A Haikou travel guide to Qilou Old Street, the UNESCO volcanic geopark, Hainanese chicken rice and tropical fruit — the northern gateway to Hainan island.
Haikou Travel guide
Haikou is the capital of Hainan province and the gateway to the island's northern shore. So many coconut palms grow here that the city is also called the "Coconut City," and palms line the coast. The climate is warm all year, so travelers from across China come in the colder months to escape the chill. On the western outskirts spreads the Haikou Volcanic Cluster Global Geopark. This is one of China's rare coastal volcanic areas, where you can see dormant craters, lava tunnels and tropical vegetation growing on volcanic rock up close. It is part of China's Lei-Qiong Global Geopark and is recognized within the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network. In the historic district, Qilou Old Street preserves the arcaded buildings erected by overseas Chinese who returned from Southeast Asia in the early 20th century. The colonnaded "qilou" blend Southeast Asian decoration with Chinese tradition, and the street was named a Chinese Historic and Cultural Street in 2009. Walking with a fresh coconut water in hand, you can still sense the atmosphere of its trading-port past. The signature dish is Hainanese chicken rice — poached chicken served over rice cooked in chicken oil. Named after the town of Wenchang, it is enjoyed as the authentic local version. Mango, papaya, coconut and other tropical fruits and seafood are also plentiful. The high-speed rail station Haikou East links the island, while Meilan International Airport connects domestically and internationally, making Haikou a convenient starting point for a Hainan journey.

Haikou Essential information
Best time to visit
The most comfortable season is winter, roughly November to March, when people gather from across China for the warm climate. Summer is hot, humid and prone to typhoons. Rain increases from spring into early summer, so winter to spring is best for walking the coast and the volcano park.
Weather and climate
A tropical monsoon climate keeps temperatures high all year. Summer is hot, humid and rainy, with typhoon activity to watch for. Winter is comparatively dry with warm days, making the city popular as a winter escape. The sun is strong, so sun protection is essential.
Local food
Hainan cuisine is at the center of Haikou's food scene, and its famous Hainanese chicken rice is loved across China. The dish pairs poached chicken with rice cooked in chicken broth, and the Wenchang version is especially famous. Mango, papaya, coconut and other tropical fruits and seafood are abundant, and local snack shops cluster around Qilou Old Street.
Getting there and around
The airport is Haikou Meilan International Airport, served by direct flights from within China and abroad. The high-speed rail station Haikou East links the island's main cities, with trains onward to Sanya. Buses are the main way around the city, while taxis and ride-hailing apps are convenient for Qilou Old Street and the volcano park.
Travel tips
Around the Lunar New Year winter holiday the city fills with visitors from the mainland, so book lodging and transport early. From summer into autumn, typhoons can cancel flights, so build flexibility into your itinerary. The lava-stone paths in the geopark are uneven, so choose sturdy shoes.
