Hanzhong Travel Guide
A Hanzhong guide to a basin town that gave the Han dynasty its name, with Three Kingdoms sites, traces of old mountain roads and spring rapeseed fields.
Hanzhong Travel guide
Hanzhong is the central city of a basin spreading at the southern foot of the Qinling range in southern Shaanxi province. Surrounded by mountains, it opens onto fertile flatland formed by rivers. As the land from which the Han dynasty took its name, it is regarded as the birthplace of 'Han,' a name that forms a cornerstone of Chinese culture.
Many historic sites connected with the Three Kingdoms remain in Hanzhong. In Mianxian there is an old temple dedicated to Zhuge Liang, and his tomb lies in a quiet forest. The city museum holds old artifacts passed down in this land, and on a hill a platform said to have been used for appointing a general still remains.
Natural scenery is also part of Hanzhong's appeal. In spring rapeseed flowers bloom across the entire basin, and a sea of yellow flowers spreads to the foot of the mountains. Traces of old roads once built along steep mountain routes also remain, and you can follow a path that runs along sheer cliffs.
Hanzhong is a land where the cultures of north and south meet through its basin and mountain roads, and this influence shows in its cooking as well. Today a railway linking Xi'an and Chengdu runs through it, and an airport has also opened. It is a town to explore slowly, taking in both historic sites and flower scenery. From the train window as it crosses the mountains, the views continue to carry a sense of history.

Hanzhong Essential information
Best time to visit
Spring and autumn suit a trip to Hanzhong. In spring especially, rapeseed flowers bloom across the whole basin, spreading a sea of yellow blossom. Many people come to take photographs at this time, so it is worth securing accommodation early. In autumn the air turns clear and the autumn leaves in the mountains become beautiful.
Weather and climate
Because the Qinling range blocks cold air from the north, Hanzhong has a warmer and more humid climate than northern Shaanxi. Summers are hot and humid with plenty of rain, while winters are mild with relatively little snow. Being among mountains, there is a temperature gap between daytime and morning and evening. Rain throughout the year is concentrated in summer.
Local food
The food of Hanzhong is marked by a north-south fusion that combines the influences of Shaanxi and Sichuan. Hanzhong rice noodles, smooth noodles made from ground rice, are a representative taste of the land. A stew of greens and tofu, and baked cakes filled generously with walnuts, are also well loved.
Getting there and around
Hanzhong is linked to Xi'an and Chengdu by rail, and the station is the gateway to the city. An airport has also opened, making the land easy to reach from various places. To the historic sites in Mianxian, you travel by car from the town. For the flower fields and old roads in the outskirts, arranging a private car makes getting around easier.
Travel tips
If you plan to follow the historic sites of the Three Kingdoms, familiarizing yourself with the stories beforehand will deepen your visit. The temple and tomb in Mianxian are some distance apart, so arranging a car to visit them in one trip is efficient. The rapeseed season is short and depends on the weather, so build a schedule with some flexibility.
