Hefei Travel Guide
A Hefei guide: Baogong Park, the Xiaoyaojin Three Kingdoms battlefield, the Sanhe water town in the suburbs and the fermented flavors of Anhui cuisine.
Hefei Travel guide
Hefei is the capital of Anhui Province in eastern China, lying between the Yangtze and Huai rivers in the Jianghuai region. The mild climate and the network of waterways brought people here early. The city still carries traces of its role as a Three Kingdoms battlefield, where the rival states of Wei and Wu clashed, and it is remembered as the hometown of Bao Zheng (Bao Gong), the upright Song-dynasty magistrate celebrated in folklore.
The main stop for history is Baogong Park, which contains the memorial hall and tomb dedicated to Bao Gong and serves as a popular green space for residents. Xiaoyaojin Park sits on the site of a Three Kingdoms battle in which the Wei general Zhang Liao held off a much larger Wu army — a draw for visitors interested in the period.
A short trip out of the city leads to Sanhe, an old water town preserving Ming and Qing streetscapes. Built where three small rivers meet, it is a cluster of stone-paved alleys and white-walled houses that rewards a slow walk. The regional food is Anhui cuisine (Hui cuisine), known for slow-braised freshwater fish with a deep, fermented aroma and for hearty hotpots that bring together mountain and sea ingredients.
Hefei has also grown into one of China's leading science and education cities, with a cluster of universities and research institutes keeping the older center more measured than frenetic. High-speed rail makes day trips from Shanghai or Nanjing realistic. A relaxed stop for history and food without the bustle.

Hefei Essential information
Best time to visit
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–October) are the best times to visit — blossoms in spring and clear skies in autumn make the parks most pleasant to walk. Summers are muggy, winters are chilly but rarely snowy, and the Chinese New Year and National Day holidays bring heavy crowds that are easy to avoid for a quieter visit.
Weather and climate
Hefei sits at the transition between subtropical and temperate China, so summers and winters can feel very different. Summers are hot and humid with muggy days in a row. Autumn is the sunniest and most pleasant season. Winters turn cold but extended sub-zero spells are uncommon. Rain is plentiful year-round, and rain gear is useful from spring into summer.
Local food
Hefei anchors Anhui cuisine (Hui cuisine). The representative dish is a slow-braised freshwater fish with a deep, fermented flavor and rich aroma. Hearty hotpots that bring together mountain and river ingredients are also popular. In Sanhe Old Town, rice-noodle dishes and river-fish snacks make an easy meal between walks.
Getting there and around
Hefei Xinqiao International is the main airport, with airport buses and subway into the center. The high-speed rail hub is Hefei South, with trains to Shanghai, Nanjing and Wuhan. Within the city, the subway covers Baogong Park and Xiaoyaojin Park. Buses are the usual way to reach Sanhe Old Town in the suburbs.
Travel tips
Baogong Park and Xiaoyaojin Park are close together and easy to walk between. Sanhe Old Town sprawls more than it looks — allow enough time. Some Anhui dishes have strong, fermented flavors; ask the kitchen if that worries you. Small bills are useful at smaller family canteens, which are often cash-only.
