Jiaxing Travel guide

Jiaxing is an old water town almost midway between Shanghai and Hangzhou in northern Zhejiang province. Canals and lakes adorn the city, and it carries down to today the atmosphere of a Jiangnan water town, with its unbroken run of white walls and stone bridges. South Lake is the city's symbol, and the water-town scenery can be enjoyed from the pavilions and walkways along its shore.A great part of Jiaxing's appeal is being the gateway to the water towns of Wuzhen and Xitang. Wuzhen has a history of more than a thousand years, and its stone-paved lanes, canals and rows of white-walled houses are as beautiful as a painted scroll. It is not a World Heritage site, however; it is at the stage of being listed on the tentative list for World Cultural Heritage as Jiangnan Water Towns.Xitang is a plainer, quieter water town than Wuzhen, known for the long covered corridors that run along its waterways. At night the lights are reflected on the water, showing a calmer face than by day. Take a small boat along the canal and you can gaze at the stone bridges and the rows of houses slowly, from the water itself. The specialty is zongzi, and Jiaxing zongzi, glutinous rice wrapped around pork, chestnuts or salted egg yolk, is known across the country. High-speed rail links the city with Shanghai and Hangzhou in a short time, and it is an easy place to stop even on a day trip. Savor the relaxed pace of a water town and the taste of its zongzi at your leisure.

Jiaxing Essential information

Best time to visit

The best seasons in Jiaxing are spring and autumn. The climate is mild and suited to strolling the water towns. Spring brings beautiful flowers, and in autumn the air clears and the canal scenery stands out. Summers are muggy and winters cold, but a water town under snow has its own charm. The old towns get crowded during the long holidays, so choosing weekdays lets you look around calmly.

Weather and climate

Jiaxing has a subtropical monsoon climate with clearly marked seasons. Summers are hot and humid, and the plum rain period brings long wet spells. Autumn has many clear days and is comfortable, and winter turns cold, though the climate is as mild as Shanghai's or Hangzhou's. Rain is frequent through the year, so a folding umbrella is a comfort.

Local food

Jiaxing's specialty is zongzi, and those of Wufangzhai in particular are known across the country. The range is rich, from ones filled with braised pork belly to ones with chestnuts, and they can be enjoyed freshly made. The technique of making them is registered as a national-level intangible cultural heritage. Freshwater fish and shrimp dishes of Jiangnan cooking can be enjoyed as well, letting you take in the food culture of a water town.

Getting there and around

Jiaxing can be reached from Shanghai or Hangzhou by high-speed train, with a short journey from either. Jiaxing South station is the main terminal. Getting around the city is mainly by local bus and car, and Wuzhen can be reached by local bus, as can Xitang. A day trip from Shanghai or Hangzhou is perfectly possible too.

Travel tips

Jiaxing makes a good base for a trip around the water towns. Wuzhen has been heavily developed for tourism, but staying overnight lets you enjoy the quiet water-town scenery of morning and night at leisure. Zongzi can be bought at the main shop of the long-established maker or at the station, and they make a good souvenir. The city is at an easy distance for fitting into a trip to Shanghai or Hangzhou.
