Kunming Travel guide

Kunming is the capital of Yunnan province. Sitting on a high plateau, it stays mild all year round and is called the Spring City. While many cities in China are hit by harsh heat or cold, Kunming has flowers without pause through the four seasons, and it is also known as the gateway to the cultures of many ethnic minorities.

The greatest sight is the Stone Forest spreading southeast of the city. Limestone pinnacles eroded by rain and wind stand like a forest, and the landscape is inscribed as a World Natural Heritage site as part of the South China Karst. Walk the trails that thread between the pointed rocks and you can feel a force that seems to come from another planet.

Within the city, Dianchi Lake serves as a place of rest, where you can stroll the shore or enjoy the view from the Western Hills. At the Yunnan Ethnic Village the traditional architecture and dances of peoples such as the Yi, Bai and Miao are presented, and as a collecting center for pu'er tea the city also draws people to tastings in its tea markets.

The star of the table is crossing-the-bridge rice noodles, finished by adding meat, vegetables and rice noodles yourself to a piping-hot broth. From summer into autumn dishes of wild mushrooms appear, and you can also enjoy the flavors of ethnic minorities, such as the sour cooking of the Dai and the Miao sour soup fish. Changshui International Airport and high-speed rail make the city a gateway to the rest of the province, a fitting starting point for a trip through Yunnan.

Kunming Essential information

Best time to visit

Highland Kunming is comfortable the year round, and in spring especially flowers bloom proudly in every part of the city. Summer is the rainy season but stays cool, and it brings the peak of wild mushrooms. Autumn has many clear days suited to visiting the Stone Forest, and even in winter the daytime cold is mild. The National Day and Spring Festival holidays are crowded, so avoiding them if you can is recommended.

Weather and climate

Kunming sits on a high plateau, and the temperature gap across the year is smaller than in other Chinese cities. True to the name Spring City it is mild through the four seasons, though the difference between morning and evening and the daytime is on the large side. Summers are the rainy season with plenty of rain, and winters are dry. The altitude makes ultraviolet rays strong, so sunscreen and a hat are a comfort.

Local food

The dish that represents Kunming is crossing-the-bridge rice noodles, in which meat, vegetables and rice noodles are added to a piping-hot broth to cook. Yunnan is a treasure house of mushrooms, and from summer into autumn hot pots of wild mushrooms such as matsutake and porcini are a specialty. Sour dishes influenced by the Dai and Miao are plentiful too, and touring teahouses for pu'er tea is another pleasure.

Getting there and around

The air gateway for Kunming is Changshui International Airport, reached from the city by subway Line 6 or airport bus. For rail, Kunming station and Kunming South station are the hubs, and high-speed trains leave Kunming South for places across the province. Getting around the city is mainly by subway and local bus, and Dianchi Lake and the Western Hills can be reached by public transport too. For the Stone Forest, high-speed rail or a chartered car is convenient.

Travel tips

Kunming sits high and ultraviolet rays are strong, so sunscreen and a hat are essential. The Stone Forest is extensive inside, so visit in comfortable walking shoes. Some wild mushrooms are poisonous, so enjoy mushroom dishes at places you can trust. High-speed trains toward Dali and Lijiang fill up easily, so booking early is a comfort.
