Lanzhou Travel Guide
A Lanzhou guide: the Yellow River and Zhongshan Bridge, the Baita Shan lookout, beef noodle soup for breakfast and Hui Muslim lamb dishes in the city.
Lanzhou Travel guide
Lanzhou is the capital of Gansu Province, a regional hub of northwest China through which the Yellow River runs east to west. Long a Silk Road gateway to the western regions, it has welcomed travelers in transit for centuries. With a large Hui Muslim population, the city carries a distinctly Islamic note, and mosque minarets appear at many street corners.
The riverfront promenade is the center of the city's sightseeing. The Zhongshan Bridge, started in 1907 and finished in 1909, was the first permanent iron bridge across the Yellow River and is nicknamed the First Bridge Under Heaven. From its base you can look upstream at the river and the hills on both banks; from Baita Shan (White Pagoda Hill) on the north bank, you can take in the whole city and the river in one view.
The dish that put Lanzhou on the national map is beef noodle soup (niurou mian) — hand-pulled wheat noodles in a clear beef-bone broth, served with thin slices of beef, daikon radish, cilantro and a slick of chili oil, and ordered by noodle width. Hui food culture also fills the city with lamb: skewers grilled over coals and boiled mutton dishes are easy to find. The night markets round things out with sweet pastries and roasted nuts.
For travelers heading deeper into Gansu — Xiahe, Dunhuang, Zhangye — Lanzhou is the natural starting point, and its stations and airport keep a steady flow of arrivals and departures. The river, the minarets and the steam off the morning noodle bowls together set the tone of the city. Take time to walk the riverfront and eat a bowl early.

Lanzhou Essential information
Best time to visit
Summer (June–August) and autumn (September–October) are the most pleasant windows. Summer is cooler than in other inland Chinese cities, which is why Lanzhou is a domestic summer-escape destination. Autumn brings clear skies and a beautiful river-front light. Spring can be chilly with dust-blown days; winter is cold. Trips onward to Dunhuang sit comfortably in the summer-to-autumn stretch.
Weather and climate
Lanzhou sits in a continental semi-arid climate with little rain and abundant sunshine. The plateau elevation keeps summers cool and the low humidity makes shade feel comfortable. Autumn is sunny. Winters are cold, and spring sees large day-to-day temperature swings. The air is dry, so carry lip balm and stay hydrated.
Local food
Lanzhou's signature is beef noodle soup: hand-pulled wheat noodles in a clear beef-bone broth, topped with thin-sliced beef, radish, cilantro and a slick of chili oil, with noodle width chosen at the counter. With strong Hui influence, lamb dishes are everywhere — grilled skewers and boiled mutton at stalls and night markets. Sweet pastries and roasted nuts round out the evening.
Getting there and around
Lanzhou Zhongchuan International is the main airport, with airport buses and a high-speed rail link into the city. The high-speed hub is Lanzhou West, with services to Xi'an, Xining and Urumqi and onward trains toward Dunhuang. Within the city, buses and taxis are the main options, with a subway on the main corridors. Zhongshan Bridge and Baita Shan are within walking distance of each other.
Travel tips
Beef noodle soup is a Lanzhou breakfast — popular places can sell out by lunchtime, so go in the morning. The dry air affects skin and throat; moisturize and drink water. Mosques are active places of worship, so dress modestly. Even in summer, evenings cool off — a light layer is useful.
