Lijiang Travel guide

Lijiang is the ancient capital of the Naxi people, situated on a highland basin in the northwest of Yunnan province. Surrounded by mountains, it has long been nourished by waterways drawing on snowmelt. Because of its high elevation, the sunlight is strong and the air clear.

Dayan Old Town, at the heart of the historic area, is known for a townscape of interwoven cobbled lanes and waterways, and forms part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site known as the Old Town of Lijiang. Naxi wooden houses and bridges over the canals convey traces of former days, and Sifang Street at the center of the town has been a place of trade and exchange since ancient times.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain soaring to the north is a peak the Naxi people have revered as a sacred mountain. A cable car runs at its foot, bringing glacial and alpine scenery close at hand. Shuhe and Baisha nearby are also part of the World Heritage site, where traces of the Tea Horse Road remain.

Lijiang is connected to various places by air and rail, reachable from Kunming, Dali and Shangri-La. In recent years the rail network has been improved, making access more convenient. Many lodgings in the old town area are converted wooden traditional buildings, letting guests savor the atmosphere. It is a town of singular charm, where Naxi culture and highland nature overlap.

Lijiang Essential information

Best time to visit

Spring and autumn are the seasons suited to travel in Lijiang, when the weather is stable and the views of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain turn beautiful. Summer brings much rain, and afternoons can be caught in sudden showers. Winter turns cold, but it is when the snow-clad mountain looks its most beautiful. During long holidays the old town gets crowded, so allow some slack in your schedule.

Weather and climate

Lijiang has a highland monsoon climate, and thanks to its elevation, summers are cool and winters do not turn extremely cold. Spring is mild, and autumn brings many clear days and comfortable weather. Summer is the rainy season, when rain tends to fall from the afternoon on. Sunshine is strong and the day-to-night temperature difference large, so a light outer layer is reassuring in any season.

Local food

The food of Lijiang layers Yunnan and Tibetan influences over the traditional cooking of the Naxi people. Jelly noodles made from chickpeas, enjoyed refreshingly with vinegar and chili oil, are a signature dish, and flatbread baked from wheat flour, yak meat hotpot and butter tea are beloved locally as well.

Getting there and around

Lijiang can be reached by air or rail. Lijiang Sanyi International Airport has flights from Kunming, Chengdu and elsewhere, with car transfers into the city. For rail there is Lijiang Station, linking with the Kunming, Dali and Shangri-La directions. Since car access is restricted in the old town area, sightseeing is basically on foot.

Travel tips

The old town area has many cobbled slopes, so wheeled suitcases are hard to move around. Traveling with a backpack is recommended, and for large luggage a porter service comes in handy. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain sits at high altitude, so take care about altitude sickness and plan a schedule that is not too demanding.
