Nanning Travel guide

Nanning is the capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southern China and one of the leafier cities of the south, long nicknamed the Green City (Lü Cheng). It sits close to the Vietnamese border and has grown into a regional hub for trade and exchange with Southeast Asian neighbors.

The main scenic draw is Qingxiu Shan, a 5A-rated scenic area that climbs the Yong River — with attractions including the Thousand-Year Cycad Garden, the Orchid Garden and the Ming-dynasty Dragon-Elephant Pagoda. Within the city, Nanhu Park and the Guangxi Ethnic Museum (famous for its bronze-drum collection) are also worth a half-day.

Zhuang and other minority cultures remain visible in everyday life, and banyan and palm avenues line many streets. Zhongshan Road Night Market is Nanning's biggest, busy well into the late hours. As a longer day trip, you can reach Detian Falls on the China–Vietnam border and back.

The local signature is laoyou fen — rice noodles tossed with a spicy minced-meat sauce, the city's signature comfort food. The night markets serve up grilled oysters, skewers and suanye — local fruit pickled in vinegar and chili — and tropical fruit is abundant and cheap. The main airport is Wuxu International; Nanning East is the high-speed rail hub, with direct trains to Guilin, Guangzhou and Kunming. Slow down — the Green City reveals itself in unhurried walks.

Nanning Essential information

Best time to visit

Autumn (October–November) into winter (December–February) is the most comfortable time to visit, and the mild days make the city a popular domestic cold-weather escape. Spring is pleasant but rain increases from May; summers are hot and humid with frequent showers. Early September, around the China–ASEAN Expo, can see accommodation tighten up.

Weather and climate

Nanning sits in a subtropical monsoon climate and stays warm and humid year-round. Winter days typically run 15–20°C, which is why the city stays green through the colder months. The rainy season begins around May; summers push toward 33°C with frequent short downpours. Autumn is the sunniest and most pleasant season.

Local food

Nanning food follows Guangxi's broader fondness for sour and spicy flavors, with Southeast Asian influence in the mix. The signature dish is laoyou fen, rice noodles tossed with a spicy minced-meat sauce. Zhongshan Road Night Market offers grilled oysters, skewers and suanye — pickled fruit in vinegar and chili — and tropical fruit is plentiful and cheap at markets.

Getting there and around

The main airport is Wuxu International, with subway and airport buses connecting it to the center. Nanning East is the high-speed rail hub, with services to Guilin, Guangzhou and Kunming. Within the city, the subway covers Qingxiu Shan, Nanhu Park and the night-market district.

Travel tips

Mosquitoes can be a nuisance in summer, so carry repellent. Zhongshan Road Night Market gets busiest after 7 pm and is especially crowded on weekends. Some stalls are cash-only, so bring small notes. Mornings are the most comfortable sightseeing time in summer, and a folding umbrella is always useful.
