Qingdao Travel Guide
A Qingdao guide to the Badaguan villas, the pier and Huilan Ge pavilion, the Tsingtao Beer Museum and the city's fresh seafood traditions on the Yellow Sea coast.
Qingdao Travel guide
Qingdao sits on the south coast of the Shandong peninsula, on the Yellow Sea. After the German concession was established in the late 19th century, the city took on its distinctive combination of red-tiled European buildings, green tree-lined streets and the blue of the bay. The old description — red tiles, green trees, blue sea, blue sky — marks out a townscape that stands apart among China's coastal cities. The historic center is the heart of sightseeing. The pier stretching out into the sea is the city's signature, ending at the Chinese-style pavilion Huilan Ge. The Badaguan area further along the coast is home to around 300 surviving villas in styles drawn from many countries — often called the World Architecture Exposition. The old German Governor's Residence and St. Michael's Cathedral are the most recognizable stops for a walk through the concession's built heritage. The Tsingtao Beer Museum tells the story of the brewery founded by German settlers in 1903, with much of the original equipment still on display. Seafood is the everyday cuisine: restaurants around the pier and the night market in the Taidong area serve clams, mussels, oysters and prawns. The local signature is clams stir-fried with chili, a dish local diners have loved for generations. To the east of the city rises Laoshan, a Daoist sacred mountain on the coast. From near the summit the bay, the city and the coastline spread out below. The main airport is Qingdao Jiaodong International; the rail hubs are Qingdao Station and Qingdao North Station. Take the sea breeze in with the seafood, the beer and the villas.

Qingdao Essential information
Best time to visit
The sea moderates the climate, and June through October is the most comfortable window for visitors. August is the peak of the Qingdao International Beer Festival, when the city is at its liveliest and accommodation prices climb — book well in advance. Winters are cold under the sea wind but pleasantly uncrowded.
Weather and climate
Qingdao's coastal setting gives it a temperate monsoon climate that is cooler in summer and milder in winter than inland cities. Summer humidity is high, but the sea breeze takes the edge off the heat. Autumn is the sunniest and most pleasant season, and the sea still holds its warmth. Winters are windy but snow is rare.
Local food
Seafood dominates the Qingdao table. Restaurants around the pier and the Taidong night market serve clams, mussels, oysters and prawns, with spicy stir-fried clams as the local signature. Tsingtao Beer is the city's signature drink, ordered by the bottle or as draft beer in most restaurants. Shandong-style dumplings and scallion pancakes are also local staples.
Getting there and around
Qingdao Jiaodong International is the main airport, linked to the center by subway and airport buses. The rail hubs are Qingdao and Qingdao North stations, with high-speed services to Jinan, Beijing and Shanghai. Within the center, the subway covers most sights, but Badaguan is best walked.
Travel tips
Only a small share of the Badaguan villas are open to the public — check which ones before you walk out. Book accommodation early for the Beer Festival. The seafront is bright; bring a hat and sunscreen. Some stalls are cash-only — keep small notes on hand.
