Quanzhou Travel guide

Quanzhou lies on the southeast coast of Fujian, looking out across the Taiwan Strait. Known in older sources as Zayton, between the 10th and 14th centuries it served as one of the principal eastern termini of the maritime trade routes that linked China with the wider world, drawing merchants from many parts of Eurasia. In 2021, the historic center of Quanzhou and a group of related monuments was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List under the name "Quanzhou: Emporium of the World in Song-Yuan China". Within the cluster, the Qingjing Mosque is one of the oldest surviving mosques in China; the Kaiyuan Temple is said to date back to the Tang dynasty; and Tianhou Palace is dedicated to the sea goddess. Quanzhou keeps a remarkable density of religious architecture side by side.Red-brick traditional houses line the lanes, and walking them gives a real sense of the old port's weight. The local food is Fujian cooking and seafood, served in snack form: very thin wheat noodles in a thickened broth for breakfast, oyster omelets, sticky-rice dumplings, and jellied seafood salads. Working through the city's old snack shops is one of the pleasures of a Quanzhou stay. The Song-Yuan maritime trade left Quanzhou a multicultural city that still reads as one. High-speed trains link Quanzhou with Xiamen and Fuzhou within a short ride. Walk the lanes slowly — the port-town past is felt in every block.

Quanzhou Essential information

Best time to visit

Autumn (October–December) and spring (March–April) are the most pleasant seasons, with mild temperatures suited to walking lanes and religious sites. Summers are muggy and bring typhoon risk. Winters stay mild in daytime and are fine for sightseeing. From summer into autumn, check the weather forecast before travel.

Weather and climate

Quanzhou has a subtropical monsoon climate and stays warm year-round. Summers are humid and typhoons can pass through. Autumn is the sunniest and most pleasant season. Winter days stay relatively mild, and most days are easy to walk. Spring and summer bring more rain, so a folding umbrella is useful.

Local food

Fujian cuisine and seafood anchor the local table. Very thin wheat noodles in a thickened broth are a Quanzhou breakfast staple, alongside oyster omelets, sticky-rice dumplings and jellied seafood salads. Snacking through the old lanes, a few bites at a time, is the most enjoyable way to get to know Quanzhou.

Getting there and around

High-speed rail reaches Quanzhou quickly from Xiamen and Fuzhou. Quanzhou Jinjiang International Airport receives flights from major Chinese cities. Within the city, buses and taxis are the main modes, and most religious sites can be covered on foot. A map app helps — the lanes are tangled.

Travel tips

Most of Quanzhou's sights lie within walking distance of each other and can be covered in a single day. The Qingjing Mosque is an active place of worship, so dress modestly when visiting. From summer into autumn, typhoons can disrupt transport — leave slack in the plan. Old-lane snack stalls are sometimes cash-only — carry small notes.
