Tai'an Travel guide

Tai'an lies in central Shandong province, south of Jinan, a town spreading at the foot of Mount Tai, held to be foremost of China's Five Great Mountains. Mount Tai has been called the First Mountain under Heaven since ancient times, a sacred mountain where emperors of successive dynasties performed the Fengshan rites to worship heaven and earth, and it was inscribed in 1987 as a UNESCO World Heritage site, a mixed natural and cultural property.

Along the climbing paths, many stone inscriptions left by emperors and men of letters are dotted about. The best-known route is the stone-step path from the Red Gate to the summit, passing the Midway Gate to Heaven and the Eighteen Bends on the way to the Jade Emperor Peak. Those unsure of their stamina can also ride a cable car from the Midway Gate to near the summit. From the Bixia Temple and the Sunrise Viewing Peak at the top, the sea of clouds at dawn can be seen at a glance.

The Dai Temple at the foot of the mountain is a grand Taoist temple that serves as the starting point of worship at Mount Tai, and is included among the World Heritage site's component parts. It houses cultural relics conveying its long history, such as Song-dynasty murals and Han-dynasty steles, and its main hall is counted among China's three great palace halls.

Tai'an can be reached by high-speed rail, and the trailheads of Mount Tai are reached from the city by bus or car. In Tai'an, where the sacred mountain and the old temple at its foot form a single whole, visitors can encounter the history of Mount Tai not only by climbing but also within the town.

Tai'an Essential information

Best time to visit

Spring and autumn are suited to climbing, and autumn in particular is a season of clear air and beautiful sunrises. In summer the foot of the mountain is hot and crowded, while the summit is cool and offers an escape from the heat. Winter brings snow scenery, but the trails freeze, making slip-resistant gear and warm clothing essential.

Weather and climate

Tai'an has a large temperature difference between the foot and the summit, and even in summer the summit turns chilly in the mornings and evenings. Spring is mild but windy, and autumn brings a run of clear days suited to climbing. Rain concentrates in summer, and the heat at the foot turns severe. In winter the summit is severely cold, with snow and ice seen.

Local food

Tai'an's food culture centers on Shandong cuisine, known for dishes using the Three Beauties of Mount Tai: Chinese cabbage, tofu and water. Simple yet deeply flavored, they are loved before and after a climb. Everyday tastes such as Shandong dumplings and pancakes can be enjoyed as well.

Getting there and around

High-speed rail is convenient for Tai'an, with Tai'an Station on the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway as the gateway. The conventional Taishan Station is close to the city center, and both connect with the Jinan and Beijing directions. The trailheads of Mount Tai can be reached from the city by bus or car in a short time.

Travel tips

For the Mount Tai climb, prepare comfortable shoes, plenty of water and warm clothing. Lodgings at the summit are limited, so book early if you plan to stay overnight for the sunrise. The cable car may suspend service in strong winds, so check the weather before planning.
