Wuhan Travel Guide
A Wuhan guide to the Yellow Crane Tower, the chime bells of the Hubei Provincial Museum and the Yangtze bridge, plus the city's breakfast culture.
Wuhan Travel guide
Wuhan is the capital of Hubei province, spread across the point where the Yangtze meets its Han tributary — the central city of central China. It is made up of three districts, Wuchang, Hankou and Hanyang, and has long prospered as a transport hub linking many provinces. The landscape of the great river and its lakes defines the city's look.
The Yellow Crane Tower, rising over the Yangtze from Snake Hill, is the symbol of Wuhan. Its origins are traced to the Three Kingdoms period, and it is famed as a tower celebrated in Tang-dynasty poetry. The present tower was rebuilt in 1985, and from its top floor the river and city spread out below. Near its foot, the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge is the first combined road-and-rail bridge over the river, listed as a nationally protected cultural relic.
The Hubei Provincial Museum is known for the great bronze chime bells excavated from the Warring States tomb of the Marquis Yi of Zeng. Reproductions of the bells are still played, letting you hear a sound from more than two thousand years ago. East Lake, far larger than Hangzhou's West Lake, is a lakeside retreat famous for its promenades and cherry blossoms.
The food culture is another highlight. With reganmian — sesame-dressed noodles — and a deep-rooted habit of eating from street stalls in the morning, Wuhan is known as a breakfast city. Steamed Wuchang fish and spicy braised duck neck are also local specialties. Tianhe International Airport and three main railway stations link the city outward, making it a convenient base for central China.

Wuhan Essential information
Best time to visit
In spring (March–April), East Lake's cherry blossoms bloom and the tree-lined Wuhan University campus draws crowds. Autumn (September–October) brings clear air and the best views from the Yellow Crane Tower. Summer (June–August) is so hot the city is called a "furnace," while winter (December–February) is cold but rarely snowy.
Weather and climate
A subtropical climate whose standout feature is summer heat. Summers are humid and fiercely muggy, with afternoon thunderstorms. Spring is short, and autumn is clear and comfortable. Winters are cold but rarely below freezing, and rain is plentiful all year.
Local food
Wuhan is known as a breakfast city, its street corners lined with morning stalls. The representative dish is reganmian, sesame-dressed noodles, and eating them from a bowl on the street is a Wuhan ritual. Also famous are doupi, glutinous rice wrapped and fried in tofu skin, and spicy braised duck neck.
Getting there and around
A hub where China's rail lines cross, with three main stations: Wuhan, Wuchang and Hankou. High-speed rail reaches Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chongqing and more. The airport is Wuhan Tianhe International Airport, connected to the city by metro. The metro serves sightseeing well, and ferries across the Yangtze are a Wuhan experience.
Travel tips
Summer is very hot, so sightsee in the morning and choose indoor spots such as museums in the afternoon. East Lake is large, so rent a bicycle to get around without strain. Reganmian is best early in the day, and some stalls sell out by afternoon. Some stalls take cash only, so keep small notes handy.
