Xiamen Travel Guide
A Xiamen travel guide: UNESCO-listed Gulangyu, Zhongshan Road, South Putuo Temple, Fujian food and mild coastal weather most months of the year.
Xiamen Travel guide
Xiamen sits on the southern coast of Fujian, looking out across the Taiwan Strait, and includes both an island and the adjacent mainland. It grew as a treaty port opened after the Opium Wars and is now one of China's best-known seaside resort cities.
The headline sight is Gulangyu, the small island a short ferry ride off the old city. The whole island was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2017 under the name "Gulangyu: An International Settlement", recognizing the dense collection of late-19th and early-20th-century foreign villas and the cultural exchange they represent. Private cars are restricted on the island — visitors walk the cobbled lanes and visit the villas, gardens and small museums one by one.
Back on the mainland, Zhongshan Road is the pedestrian shopping street, lined with Fujian-cuisine restaurants and seafood places that stay open late. South Putuo Temple is an ancient Buddhist temple whose hillside behind it looks back over the city and the sea. The coastal promenade continues the walk under tropical trees.
Fujian cuisine and fresh seafood are Xiamen's food signature. Mild weather makes dining outdoors a year-round option, and high-speed trains connect Xiamen with Fuzhou and Shenzhen. The contrast between Gulangyu's quiet lanes and the lively seafront on the mainland is the city's lasting pull.

Xiamen Essential information
Best time to visit
Autumn (October–December) and spring (March–May) are the most comfortable seasons. The mild temperatures suit walking Gulangyu and the seafront. Summers are muggy and the typhoon risk rises, so leave slack in the itinerary. Winters are mild and appeal to visitors escaping colder weather.
Weather and climate
Xiamen has a subtropical monsoon climate and stays warm year-round. Summer humidity is high and typhoon risk rises during the season. Autumn is the sunniest and most pleasant season. Winter days stay relatively warm, comfortable for walking the seafront. Rain is heavier from spring into summer — a folding umbrella is useful.
Local food
Fujian cuisine and seafood anchor the Xiamen table. A noodle dish dressed in a fragrant peanut-based sauce is a local classic, alongside oyster omelets and a range of chilled seafood dishes at the markets and small restaurants. On Gulangyu, stylish cafés make a natural pause between walks.
Getting there and around
Xiamen Gaoqi International is the main airport. The rail hubs are Xiamen Station and Xiamen North, with high-speed services to Fuzhou and Shenzhen. Ferries connect the mainland piers with Gulangyu. The city's subway and bus network covers Zhongshan Road and South Putuo Temple.
Travel tips
Ferries to Gulangyu get crowded — pre-booking a slot helps. Walking shoes are essential on the island. From summer into autumn, typhoons can stop ferries and flights — check forecasts. For seafood, choose a busy restaurant on a main street to be safe.
