Xining Travel guide

Xining is the capital of Qinghai province and a highland city at the gateway to the Tibetan Plateau. Since ancient times it has flourished as a transport hub where the routes linking the Silk Road and Tibet converged, and today many travelers still come here as the starting point of journeys toward the plateau and Qinghai Lake.

Taer Monastery, in the western suburbs, is known as the birthplace of Tsongkhapa, founder of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, and counts as one of the six great monasteries of the Gelug tradition. Within its grounds, where the Great Golden Tile Hall and the Great Assembly Hall stand, butter sculptures, murals and appliqué work are known as the three wonders of Taer Monastery. In the city center stands the Dongguan Great Mosque, founded in the Ming dynasty, whose prayer hall blends traditional Chinese and Islamic architecture beautifully.

To the west spreads Qinghai Lake, China's largest inland saltwater lake. In summer the rapeseed flowers bloom along its shores, and the contrast between the blue of the water and the yellow of the flowers is striking. Back in the city you can enjoy a range of multi-ethnic culinary traditions, from lamb dishes shaped by Hui cooking to paozhang noodles cut short and served with broth, and Tibetan butter tea.

In the city center, the minarets of mosques stand next to modern buildings, creating a scene unique to this highland city. This land, once traveled by caravans, is now linked to Lanzhou and Xi'an by high-speed rail, and access has improved greatly. Take a slow walk through Xining, where multi-ethnic communities and plateau landscapes meet.

Xining Essential information

Best time to visit

From summer into autumn is the most comfortable stretch, well suited to enjoying the rapeseed flowers at Qinghai Lake and the plateau scenery. Even in summer, mornings and evenings turn cold, so have something to layer over your clothes ready. Winters are severely cold, and in spring strong winds can send sand swirling.

Weather and climate

A high-altitude continental plateau climate, with cool summers and severely cold winters. Even within a single day the temperature swings widely between morning and afternoon, and mornings and evenings are chilly even in summer. Ultraviolet rays are strong, so sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses are needed. Rain is scarce and the air dry, so having moisturizing supplies is a comfort.

Local food

A food culture where the flavors of Hui, Tibetan and Han cooking overlap. Standards include yangrou paomo, bread torn into simmered lamb soup, shouzhua yangrou boiled in salt, and paozhang noodles cut short. You can also try Mongolian and Tibetan butter tea, yogurt, and tsampa made from roasted naked barley flour.

Getting there and around

The air gateway is Xining Caojiabao International Airport, connected to the city by airport bus and other services. From Xining station, high-speed trains run toward Lanzhou and Xi'an, and it is also the starting point of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway toward Lhasa in Tibet. For Qinghai Lake and Taer Monastery, going by car or tour bus is the usual choice.

Travel tips

After arriving, watch out for altitude sickness: avoid strenuous exercise and alcohol on the first day and drink plenty of water. The shores of Qinghai Lake sit even higher than the city, so cold-weather gear is necessary. When visiting temples and mosques, respect worshippers and check local guidance on dress and whether photography is allowed.
