Yanqing Travel guide

Yanqing is a district in the northwest of Beijing, spread over a highland beyond the mountains northwest of the city. Ringed by mountains, it has towns and villages scattered through its valleys. As a northern gateway to the capital, it has long been positioned as a key point of defense. It is cooler than the city and blessed with clear air.

The Great Wall is what most represents this land. Besides the Badaling section, where the wall runs on along the ridgelines, remains of the Great Wall survive in the steep mountains. In and around the district lie many gorges as well, offering views where cut rock walls and greenery overlap. Walking the mountain paths, one meets a quiet nature that feels far from the capital.

Around the grasslands and lakes in the west, reed beds and waterside stretches open out, and in season water birds can be seen. At the foot of the Great Wall remain old pass sites and the settled look of former villages, letting one feel the length of human life on this land. It is a place where both nature and history can be savored at a calm pace.

Yanqing is reached from central Beijing by rail or expressway. A day trip from the city is possible, but with many sights to see, an overnight stay lets one travel at ease. Combining the Great Wall with gorges and grasslands, a leisurely itinerary is recommended.

Yanqing Essential information

Best time to visit

Spring and autumn suit walking the Great Wall and the gorges. In spring the mountain green is soft, and in autumn the air is clear and views reach far. Summer is cooler than the city, with highland breezes to enjoy. Winter brings severe cold, so dress for the chill when walking.

Weather and climate

Set on a highland among the mountains, it runs cooler than the city of Beijing proper, and summer passes comfortably. Winters are severely cold, and snow can settle at times. Day-to-night temperature swings are large, and winds blow easily along the valleys. Being able to adjust with clothing helps.

Local food

In the mountain villages, dishes using grains and beans from the fields are well loved. In the valley settlements, local flavors that warm the body in cold weather have been carried on, such as tofu dishes and hot-pot meals around a brazier. Simple cooking that makes the most of local ingredients can be tasted at village diners.

Getting there and around

Yanqing can be reached from central Beijing by rail or expressway. The Great Wall and the gorges lie apart, so using a car or local buses is convenient in the area. A day trip from the city is possible, but allowing time for travel is safer. Deciding which places to see first makes getting around easier.

Travel tips

Some paths along the Great Wall and through the gorges are steep. Choose easy walking shoes, carry water, and walk within your limits. Mountain weather changes easily, so rain gear and a layer to put on help. On windy days bring a jacket, and follow the guidance to walk on prepared paths.
