Huangshan Travel Guide
A Huangshan guide to the granite peaks and sea of clouds of a World Heritage mountain, the old villages of Xidi and Hongcun, and Huizhou cuisine.
Huangshan Travel guide
Huangshan is a mountain rising in the south of Anhui province, known for the scenery woven from its granite peaks and sea of clouds. Loved by painters and poets since ancient times, it has long been a subject of Chinese landscape painting.
The Huangshan Scenic Area is registered as a UNESCO mixed cultural and natural World Heritage site, and its highlights are the curious rocks, old pines, sea of clouds and hot springs. Walkways linking the steep peaks are in place, and at sunrise and sunset the peaks float on the clouds. Named pines and rocks, such as the Guest-Greeting Pine, welcome climbers.
Tunxi Old Street at the foot of the mountain is a commercial town that retains the look of the Song dynasty. Rows of white walls and tiled roofs in the Huizhou style stand along it, with shops selling tea and inkstones side by side. Nearby Xidi and Hongcun are component sites of the UNESCO World Heritage listing Ancient Villages in Southern Anhui – Xidi and Hongcun, known for village scenery built around waterways and for their finely detailed wood carvings.
In food, Huizhou cuisine makes the most of fermentation, and dishes with distinctive flavors such as fermented fish stew and hairy tofu are served. Fragrant baked Huangshan cakes are also well suited to taking home as a souvenir. It is a destination representative of Anhui, where mountain, old villages and cuisine can be enjoyed together.

Huangshan Essential information
Best time to visit
Spring and autumn are the easiest seasons for climbing Huangshan. The weather is settled then, and the sea of clouds and views of the peaks are easier to enjoy. In summer the cool summit is good for escaping the heat, but there is more rain. In winter the snow-covered scenery is beautiful, while paths can freeze, so attention to equipment is needed.
Weather and climate
Because of its high elevation, Huangshan is a mountain with lower temperatures than the foot of the range and changeable weather. Spring and autumn are comfortable, and summer is cool but with more rain. In winter snow and ice make paths slippery. Clouds are common and rain gear and warm clothing are needed, so check the forecast before climbing.
Local food
The food around Huangshan centers on Huizhou cuisine. Dishes with a distinctive aroma and savor are served, such as fermented fish stew and hairy tofu. Fragrant baked Huangshan cakes are favored as a light snack or souvenir and can be enjoyed together with local tea.
Getting there and around
Huangshan can be reached by air, rail and road. Huangshan Tunxi International Airport has flights from cities around the country, and the high-speed rail station Huangshan North is also in place. Tunxi Old Street and the old villages at the foot of the mountain are usually reached by car. The climb itself combines a cable car with walking trails.
Travel tips
Climbing Huangshan involves long distances, so easy walking shoes and clothes that allow movement are essential. The weather changes easily, so carry rain gear and warm clothing. On weekends and long holidays the cable cars are crowded, so entering the mountain early is recommended. The stone steps are slippery, so watch your footing as you climb.
