Zhengzhou Travel Guide
A Zhengzhou guide to the Henan Museum's bronzes and oracle bones, the Shaolin Temple and nearby ancient capitals, plus huimian and hula soup.
Zhengzhou Travel guide
Zhengzhou is the capital of Henan province and the central city of the Zhongyuan region, spread along the south bank of the Yellow River. Regarded as one of the cradles of Chinese civilization, it holds Shang-dynasty capital ruins and many other ancient remains in its surroundings. In modern times it grew as a railway junction into one of China's key transport nodes.
The Henan Museum gathers the province's history in one place, housing bronzes, jades and ceramics from the Shang and Zhou periods. Begun in 1927, it is now counted among China's top-tier museums. Seeing the oracle-bone inscriptions and bronzes excavated from the Yin ruins brings the sources of Chinese civilization close.
Zhengzhou is also a base for visiting Henan's ancient capitals. The "Center of Heaven and Earth" historic monuments at the foot of Mount Song, which include the Shaolin Temple, are a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site — famous as a temple of Chan Buddhism and martial arts, together with the Songyang Academy and an ancient observatory. The Longmen Grottoes at Luoyang and Kaifeng, the former capital of the Northern Song, are also within easy reach by train.
Henan flavors lead the food, with huimian — wide noodles simmered in lamb or beef broth — and the peppery, thickened hula soup among the local favorites. High-speed rail lines cross at Zhengzhou East station, giving good access from all directions.

Zhengzhou Essential information
Best time to visit
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–October) are mild and suit day trips to Luoyang and Kaifeng. Summer (June–August) brings heat above 35 degrees, and winter (December–February) turns cold. The National Day and Spring Festival holidays are crowded, so avoiding them makes sightseeing calmer.
Weather and climate
A continental climate with clearly marked seasons. Summer is hot and humid with fierce heat, while winter is dry and sharply cold. Spring is mild but can bring yellow dust. Autumn has many clear days and is the best season for visiting relics and ruins.
Local food
Zhengzhou's food carries on Henan traditions and is rich in wheat-flour noodles. Huimian — wide noodles simmered in lamb or beef broth — is the representative dish, while hula soup, a peppery, chili-spiced thickened soup, is a breakfast staple. Night markets offer skewers and fried dough with ease.
Getting there and around
A hub where China's high-speed rail lines cross, Zhengzhou East station sends trains to Beijing, Xi'an and Wuhan. The airport is Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport, reached from the center by metro. The metro is convenient for city sightseeing, while Shaolin Temple, Luoyang and Kaifeng are reached by train or car.
Travel tips
The Henan Museum may require reservations and ID, so check beforehand. Summer is very hot, so do your sightseeing in the morning and choose indoor museums or temples in the afternoon. Allow enough time for Shaolin Temple so you can tour it unhurried.
