Zhuhai Travel Guide
Zhuhai: the 55-kilometer Lovers Road promenade and Fisher Girl statue, Hengqin Island's resorts, Cantonese seafood and a walkable border with Macau.
Zhuhai Travel guide
Zhuhai lies in southern Guangdong, immediately north of Macau. One of the Special Economic Zones set up after the reform era began, it has developed into a long, open city whose coastline and greenery define its character. The signature of the city is Lovers' Road (Qinglü Lu), the coastal promenade that runs along the eastern shore. The full promenade stretches for about 55 kilometers and links several seaside sights — the Fisher Girl statue, Xianglu Bay and the Zhuhai Grand Theater among them. Seabirds cross the bay in the mornings; at dusk the lights of the city and the water come together; at night the lights of Macau are visible across the water, which is why this is the most popular time to walk it.Hengqin Island gathers resorts, large theme parks and an aquarium, and makes for an easy family day. A garden complex re-creating an imperial resort of the Qing dynasty offers a quieter counterpoint. The neighboring small islands have relaxed beaches when the weather allows. The local food is Cantonese seafood: steamed and stir-fried dishes that are light on the palate, with Hengqin oysters and locally grown lotus root among the local standouts.Zhuhai shares a walkable border crossing with Macau at Gongbei Port. The airport is Zhuhai Jinwan, and high-speed trains connect Zhuhai Station with Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Within the city, buses and taxis are the everyday options; the coastal route is best covered by bus. Take the sea breeze — Zhuhai rewards slow, seaside mornings.
