Guiyang Travel Guide
Plan a Guiyang trip: the Jiaxiu Tower on the Nanming River, Qianling Mountain Park and Qingyan Ancient Town, plus the region's sour-soup fish and minority culture.
Guiyang Travel guide
Guiyang is the capital of Guizhou province, a highland city that spreads across the karst terrain of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. Mountains rise on every side and greenery runs deep into the city, earning it the affectionate nickname of the "Forest City." Summers are cool, and people travel here from across China to escape the heat.
The Jiaxiu Tower floats over the Nanming River in the city center. This three-story pavilion was built in the Ming dynasty, and its vermilion form mirrored on the water is the signature view of Guiyang. Together with the Wenchang Pavilion it is listed among nationally protected cultural relics. To the northwest, Qianling Mountain Park is a lush hill overlooking the center, where the Hongfu Temple and a troop of wild monkeys give residents a place to relax.
On the outskirts, Qingyan Ancient Town grew from a Ming-dynasty military outpost. Its stone lanes and city gates preserve the look of that earlier era. Guizhou is a region rich in minority cultures, and Miao and Dong villages dot the surrounding countryside, where you can encounter silverwork, embroidery, the sound of the lusheng reed pipe, and the distinctive drum towers and wind-and-rain bridges.
The local food is defined by sour and spicy flavors: fermented sour-soup fish, Changwang noodles served with pig's blood and intestines in a spicy broth, and Siwawa, thin wraps filled with vegetables, are all local favorites. A metro runs through the city, and the ancient towns and scenic spots of the outskirts are easy to reach. Take your time walking through Guiyang, where greenery, history and rich minority culture come together.

Guiyang Essential information
Best time to visit
The cool summer is the main draw, and in July and August visitors arrive from across China to escape the heat. Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are also comfortable and well suited to strolling the city and its outskirts. Winter brings many overcast days and colder weather, though temperatures rarely drop below freezing.
Weather and climate
A subtropical highland climate means summers are cooler than the latitude suggests and winters are not bitterly cold. Overcast days are common all year — a local saying holds that there are not three clear days in a row. Because the sun is often weak, a light outer layer is useful even in summer.
Local food
Fermented sourness and heat define Guiyang's flavors. Sour-soup fish is a Miao tradition of poaching fish in a sour broth, while Changwang noodles pair pig's blood and intestines with a spicy soup. Siwawa, thin wraps filled with vegetables or meat and dipped in a sauce of your choosing, is a much-loved snack.
Getting there and around
A transport hub for Guizhou, the high-speed rail station Guiyang North sends trains to Chengdu, Guangzhou and Kunming. The airport is Guiyang Longdongbao International Airport. A metro system serves the city, making the central Jiaxiu Tower and Qianling Mountain Park easy to reach.
Travel tips
Karst mountain paths and the stone lanes of the ancient town can be slippery, so sturdy shoes are recommended. The weather is often overcast with sudden showers, so carry a folding umbrella. When visiting minority villages, check the local customs around photography and access beforehand.
