Hangzhou Travel guide
Hangzhou is the capital of Zhejiang province and a sightseeing city that combines history and scenic beauty among the finest in China. Marco Polo, who visited in the 13th century, is said to have praised its beauty, and West Lake at the center of the city has been loved by writers and scholars since ancient times.West Lake was inscribed as a World Cultural Heritage site in 2011 as the West Lake Cultural Landscape of Hangzhou. The Bai Causeway and Su Causeway cross the water, and the lake shows a different face with every visit: peach and willow in spring, lotus in summer, the moon reflected on the water in autumn, and a coat of snow in winter. Strolling the shore, or viewing it from a sightseeing boat, is recommended.West Lake is not the only sight. Lingyin Temple in the west of the city is a Zen temple with a long history, and the grottoes of Feilaifeng are lined with Buddhist carvings. In Longjing village, a home of Longjing tea, you can look over the tea fields and taste the new season's tea. Hefang Street, which keeps traces of the Southern Song, is a pleasant walking street lined with traditional crafts and snacks. In food, Dongpo pork, West Lake vinegar fish and a stir-fry of Longjing tea with river shrimp are famous, and they can be savored along with the view at long-established restaurants by the lake. The air gateway is Xiaoshan International Airport, and Hangzhou East station is the rail hub, with high-speed trains linking the city to Shanghai and Nanjing. Savor West Lake through the seasons and the culture of Jiangnan at leisure.

Hangzhou Essential information
Best time to visit
The best seasons in Hangzhou are spring and autumn. In spring the peach and willow along the shore are beautiful, and it coincides with the season for new Longjing tea. In autumn the air clears and the moon reflected on the water is especially striking. Summers are muggy and winters chilly, but a West Lake under snow has its own charm. The long holidays are extremely crowded, so avoiding them if you can is recommended.
Weather and climate
Hangzhou has a subtropical monsoon climate with clearly marked seasons. Spring is mild but humidity rises, and early summer brings the plum rain and long wet spells. Summer is hot and humid, with muggy days on end. Autumn has many clear days and is the most comfortable time, while winter turns cold and snow sometimes falls. Rain is frequent through the year, so a folding umbrella is a comfort.
Local food
Hangzhou cooking is the leading school of Zhejiang cuisine, known for a light, refined seasoning that draws on the character of the ingredients. The most famous dish is Dongpo pork, pork belly simmered in soy sauce until it falls apart. Sweet-and-sour fish from West Lake and Longjing shrimp, river shrimp stir-fried with Longjing tea, are standards too. Among snacks, xiaolongbao and mao er duo are favorites, and the authentic flavors can be enjoyed at long-established restaurants.
Getting there and around
The air gateway for Hangzhou is Xiaoshan International Airport, reached from the city by subway or airport bus. Hangzhou East station is the rail hub, linked to Shanghai and Nanjing by high-speed train. Sightseeing in the city is mainly by subway and local bus, and around West Lake walking or cycling is comfortable. Sightseeing boats can be boarded from several piers, and Longjing village can be reached by local bus.
Travel tips
The area around West Lake is large, so covering it on foot alone is hard work. Combining rented bicycles, sightseeing boats and the lakeside tourist bus is efficient. For Longjing tea, shops run directly by tea farmers are a comfort. Lingyin Temple also requires a separate admission fee for the Feilaifeng area, so visit with time to spare. West Lake gets crowded during the long holidays, so early morning is recommended.
