A Nanchang guide to the Tengwang Pavilion, the Gan River night views and the city's riverside Ferris wheel, plus banfen noodles and waguan soup.
Nanchang Travel guide
Nanchang is the capital of Jiangxi province, on the lower reaches of the Gan River. The city is split between an old district east of the river and a newer one to the west, with the great river running through its middle. The Gan flows on into Poyang Lake, one of China's great freshwater lakes, and the waterside scenery defines the city.On the east bank stands the Tengwang Pavilion, counted among China's famed towers. Built in the Tang dynasty, it became known through the poem "Preface to the Tengwang Pavilion." The present tower was rebuilt in 1989, and from its 57.5-meter height you can take in the river and the city.On the west bank, a waterfront plaza has been developed, and at night its fountains and the opposite bank's lights reflect on the water. A large Ferris wheel — 160 meters tall with a 153-meter wheel diameter — offers a view over the city and the flowing river. From dusk into night, the waterside scenery is at its best.Nanchang's food is defined by heat and soy, and banfen — rice noodles tossed with chili oil and condiments — is a breakfast staple. Waguan soup, simmered slowly in small clay pots, is another city favorite. High-speed rail links Nanchang with Shanghai, Hangzhou and Changsha, making it a city to enjoy for its waterside views and unpretentious food.

Nanchang's cooking is known for heat and savory depth. Banfen — rice noodles tossed with chili oil and condiments — is the city's breakfast staple. Waguan soup, simmered slowly in small clay pots, concentrates the flavor of its stock. Freshwater fish from the rivers and lakes and sweet glutinous-rice snacks are also loved.

Travel tips
