Shanghai Travel guide

Shanghai is a directly administered municipality located in eastern China at the mouth of the Yangtze River, and it is the country's largest economic city. Flanking the Huangpu River, historic Puxi lies to the west, while the Pudong New Area stretches to the east; since its opening as an international port in the mid-19th century, Shanghai has grown into a major global trading hub.On the west bank of the Huangpu River, the Bund features a row of colonial-era buildings from the foreign concession period. Across the river, in Pudong, towering skyscrapers—including the 632-meter-tall Shanghai Tower—rise skyward, and at night, both banks are illuminated, their reflections shimmering on the water—a quintessential scene that defines Shanghai.A classic sightseeing destination is Yu Garden, built during the Ming Dynasty, where visitors can admire the beauty of a Jiangnan-style garden adorned with Taihu rocks and ponds. Adjacent to the garden, Yu Garden Mall offers street food such as xiaolongbao, while the Shanghai Museum, renowned for its collection of ancient bronzes and ceramics, can be explored free of charge. The plane-tree-lined streets of the former French Concession and Xintiandi, a revitalized area of shikumen residences, are also popular spots for strolling through the city.Shanghai serves as a major hub for China's high-speed rail network, making day trips to Hangzhou and Suzhou easily accessible. The city's two main airports are Pudong International Airport and Hongqiao International Airport, with Hongqiao directly connected to a high-speed rail station. Take your time to explore this city where tradition and modernity coexist.

Shanghai Essential information

Best time to visit

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the most comfortable seasons, ideal for strolling along the Bund and exploring Yu Garden. Spring is renowned for its beautiful blossoms, while autumn offers crisp air and a sense of lofty skies. Summer brings high temperatures and humidity, frequent thunderstorms, and occasional typhoons. Winter is relatively mild but damp, with chilly ground-level temperatures.

Weather and climate

It has a subtropical monsoon climate with distinct seasons. Humidity rises from May, and the rainy season typically begins around June. Summers bring prolonged periods of intense heat, with afternoon thunderstorms and typhoons requiring caution. Autumn offers plenty of clear days and is the most comfortable season, while winters are relatively mild, with severe cold spells being rare.

Local food

Shanghai cuisine is characterized by rich, bold flavors enhanced with soy sauce and oil. A signature dish is xiaolongbao—small steamed buns filled with hot soup encased in delicate skin—whose renowned shops are often found in Yu Garden. Other popular specialties include Shanghai hairy crab, a seasonal delicacy enjoyed in autumn; braised pork belly in soy sauce (hongshao rou); and shengjianbao, pan-fried xiaolongbao.

Getting there and around

The city's air gateways are Pudong International Airport and Hongqiao International Airport. Hongqiao is directly connected to a high-speed rail station, making it convenient for traveling to Hangzhou and Nanjing. Within the city, an extensive subway network serves as the main mode of transportation, providing access to major attractions. Taking a ferry across the Huangpu River is another uniquely Shanghai way to get around.

Travel tips

In crowded areas such as Yuyuan Garden and Nanjing Road, be cautious of pickpocketing and theft. Popular attractions may require advance reservations during extended holidays. In summer, flights can be delayed due to typhoons, so it's advisable to build some flexibility into your itinerary.
