Urumqi Travel Guide
A Urumqi guide to the Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar, the Heavenly Lake of the World Heritage Tianshan, and Uyghur dishes such as kawap and polo.
Urumqi Travel guide
Urumqi is the capital of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, an oasis city spread at the northern foot of the Tianshan range. True to a name that means beautiful pasture in Mongolian, the city opens within a green belt nourished by snowmelt from the mountains. As a great inland city far from any sea, it has fostered a culture of its own.
The Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar in the center of the city is a large market with domes and minarets. Carpets, silk, ethnic musical instruments, dried fruit and nuts are packed tightly into it, carrying the look of Silk Road trade down to today. At the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region Museum in the city you can see the history of the Silk Road, the lives of its various peoples, and precious materials unearthed here.
Tianchi, the Heavenly Lake north of the city, was formed by mountain snow and glaciers. Ringed by spruce forest and snowy peaks, it is loved as a summer resort for seeking cool air and as a place to enjoy snowy scenery in winter. The area including the lake is part of the World Natural Heritage site of Xinjiang Tianshan. Climb the hill of Hongshan Park in the city and you can take in the town and the distant ranges at a glance.
The table is set with Uyghur cooking. Kawap, lamb skewers seasoned with herbs, polo, rice cooked with lamb and carrots, and freshly baked naan — the flavors of Central Asia are part of daily life. Urumqi is the starting point for traveling in Xinjiang and a base for extending your trip to the nearby plateaus and oases. Take a slow walk through this city where diverse cultures overlap.

Urumqi Essential information
Best time to visit
From summer into autumn is the most comfortable stretch and well suited to visiting the Heavenly Lake and the plateaus nearby. In autumn the markets fill with fruit, making it a delightful season for the palate too. Winters are severely cold with heavy snow, though some people come for the snowy scenery. In spring strong winds can send sand flying.
Weather and climate
A dry continental climate, marked by wide swings between cold and heat even within a single day. Summer sunshine is strong and the air dry, so keeping hydrated is essential. Autumn is short, and winter brings long, severely cold weather. Spring has days of strong winds and blowing sand. Measures against dryness are needed all year round.
Local food
A city where Central Asian and Uyghur flavors overlap. The representatives are kawap, lamb skewers seasoned with cumin, polo, rice cooked with lamb, carrots and raisins, and dapanji, chicken and potatoes simmered in a mildly spicy sauce. Freshly baked naan and laghman, hand-pulled noodles, are standards too, and in the markets you can taste dried fruit preserved in honey along with nuts.
Getting there and around
The air gateway is Urumqi Diwopu International Airport, which also has flights toward Central Asia. The subway and airport buses connect it to the city. Urumqi station on the high-speed rail network is a hub of Xinjiang's railways, with trains running to Turpan and other nearby places. Getting around the city is mainly by subway and bus, and for the Heavenly Lake you go by car or bus.
Travel tips
Because the air is dry and the sun strong, bring moisturizer and sunscreen. Mornings and evenings can be cold even in summer, so a light layer comes in handy. In the markets, haggling over prices is normal. When visiting places of worship, keep skin covered and choose clothing and behavior that respect worshippers.
